Connections
- Text to text, The Concubine's Children is a Portrait of a Family Divided is a non-fiction book written by Chinese-Canadian writer Denise Chong, first published in January 1995 by Penguin Books In the book, the author traces her family's history, giving a narrative account of members from both sides of the ocean. The Concubine's Children is Chong's first book, which she compiled from letters. This book is almost identical in comparison to The disappearing moon cafe as it is a book of a family's distant and not so distant connections.
- Text to world, when Beatrice ran away from home. Keeman goes to his mother to find the truth about his father, but his mother, Song An, was not sure who was his real father. this is a strong representation of a mother who is holding the burden of not being able to tell her son who her real father is.
- Text to self, As Keeman came back from WWII, he and beatrice are reunited, fall in love and are soon engaged. This is a personal connection by reason of my parents getting engaged a week after my dad got back from work camp. It is also similar because my step mother and my dad had met at the young ages of 15 and 16.
- Text to text, Lillian Ho is a fourteen-year-old girl living with her family in Vancouver's Chinatown, in the year 1909. Her mother is overburdened with work and children; her father is frequently absent on mysterious business. When he fails to return from a trip, the family's circumstances deteriorate. Finally, Third Uncle threatens to send them back to China.
- Text to world, When Mui Lan came to hear the waitress’s story, she broke down and ran away. Choy Fuk went to find her. “Fong Mei thought of this crisis as an opportunity for a shopping spree”(p.216) Beatrice and Sue were to come along. this is a connection made to when someone is upset and they have their friends there to support and propose ideas to get over the struggles that they are dealing with in that moment.
- Text to text, Obasan chronicles Canadas interman and persecution of its citizens of Japanese descent during World War II from the perspective of a young child. In 2005. This novel is similar to the disappearing moon cafe regarding that its a chinese story taking place in a canadian location.
- text to world, Kae is currently dating Morgan, but is always haunted by the past of Suzanne and Morgan. This is a connection i made to societies love lives. for example, say a person was going to engage with another person, that person might feel uncomfortable knowing about his/her past.
-text to self, When Mui Lan came to hear the waitress’s story, she broke down and ran away. when i hear a sad story or something that is not positive for that person i feel it too. so as Mui Lan broke down and ran away Choy Fuk chased after her. In this this section of the story i feel as though Choy Fuk is having the same feelings i would be having in that moment.
-text to text, Throughout the five chapters of The Woman Warrior, Kingston blends autobiography with old Chinese folktales. What results is a complex portrayal of the 20th century experiences of Chinese-Americans living in the U.S in the shadow of the Chinese Revolution. this book is a substitute for the disappearing moon cafe in regards to that it is a chinese based culture about family ties within that family.
- text to self, “Fong Mei thought of this crisis as an opportunity for a shopping spree”(p.216) Beatrice and Sue were to come along. I can personally relate to this because whenever i'm really upset about anything i always surround myself with the people i love like my friends or family, with these brilliant people we do activities to try and to achieve an almost blank mind. just how Fong Mei looks at a bad situation and turns it into something positive.
